You could hear it happen through the TV. Celtics forward Gordon Hayward went up for an alley-oop pass Tuesday night in the season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers and came down hard on his left ankle.
The ankle collapsed entirely, dislocating at a gruesome angle while Hayward’s tibia broke clean. Hayward writhed. The Cavs bench, right in front of the action, seized, with some of the reserves covering their mouths and physically leaving the court. The Celtics huddled in prayer. TNT announcer Kevin Harlan knew at once: “Oh, Hayward broke his leg. Hayward has broken his leg.” Then the camera cut to a shot of the injury, close up, crooked, and grisly. It made your stomach drop.

The response was horror. On the NBA’s marquee night, sports Twitter devolved into a collective recoil. NBA stars like Paul George and DeMar DeRozan voiced their support, while Cavaliers stars LeBron James and Isaiah Thomas went back and visited Hayward in the locker room during the stoppage.
